SYNOPSIS:Before he was the suave, sophisticated and dashing movie star known as Cary Grant, he was a rising young leading man appearing in every type of genre film from war epic to action-adventure to romantic melodrama. Cary Grant - The Early Years Collection is a three-picture sampler of his early years at Paramount.
Devil and the Deep (TCM Vault) (1932)
An intense drama stars Charles Laughton as a mentally unstable naval officer whose jealousy forces wife Tallulah Bankhead into the arms of lieutenant Cary Grant. When Grant shows up for duty aboard his submarine, Laughton goes off the deep end and collides the vessel with a freighter. When a struggle for command between the two men ensues, stowaway Bankhead attempts to convince the crew that her spouse is insane.
The Eagle and the Hawk (TCM Vault) (1933)
This compelling WWI aviation drama stars Fredric March as the American commander of a British flying squadron who grows embittered over his sending of men to their deaths. After he returns from ordered shore leave, he finds the pressure of his career too much to bear--resulting in tragedy. With the help of cynical friend Cary Grant, he embarks on one final mission.
The Last Outpost (TCM Vault) (1935)
Set against the backdrop of World War I, this classic drama stars Cary Grant as a British officer assigned to the Eastern Front who is attacked by raiders and left to die in the Kurdish desert. Rescued by mysterious intelligence agent Claude Rains, he eventually reaches a British military hospital in Cairo. While recovering there, he falls for nurse Gertrude Michael--unaware that she is Rains' wife.
