SYNOPSIS:Three early Hitchcock silents remastered from original studio negatives with digital dolby music soundtracks.
The Pleasure Garden (1925)
The film takes a look at the world of showgirls in the "wild" 20's. After much confusion and errors the real two lovers find each other. Hitchcock has adapted the novel by Oliver Sandys with emotion and suspense. This very first work of Hitchcock is an exciting thriller with high tension guaranteed to the end. The Pleasure Garden was actually Hitchcock's second film, but the first to be completed. Hitchcock's first film, Number 13, could not be completed because the production company went bankrupt. The Pleasure Garden became a later highly regarded and critically acclaimed film.
In the beginning a Co-producer had to be found, because nobody in Britain had agreed to provide money for a film of a novice director. As a sponsor then a German production company, the Munich Lichtspielkunst Emelka was found and the film was made as German production at Munich Geiselgasteig. The outdoor shots were later taken in Italy. Movie premiere, and with it the first performance of a Hitchcock film ever, was on the 3rd of November 1925 in Munich.
The Farmer's Wife (1928)
A widowed farmer wants to marry again and meets, after intensive consultations with his housekeeping woman, with some candidates. None of these girls will appear as the right one and the girls show only little interest in him.Gradually, the farmer realizes that his housekeeper could possibly be the right one for him.
The Farmer's Wife was a successful stage play in London and caught Hitchcock's interest. He was attracted by the idea to replace the rich dialogue and static stage version with film techniques. Alfred Hitchcock would later implement several of these and similar projects successfully. Due to the illness of his cameraman John J. Cox, Hitchcock was also forced to take on this role and to shoot most of the film itself. The outdoor shots were filmed in Wales, first performance was in March 1928 in London.
Easy Virture (1928)
A young and beautiful woman, Larita Filton, is married to an alcoholic and is cheating him with a young artist. Her young lover can't take the feelings and the immoral attitude of his beloved and commits suicide. Then the marriage of the Filtons is divorced. Larita flees to France where she continues her immoral life without any remorse. She marries again and leaves her husband also from spurious reasons. Hitchcock shows Larita as a woman without any decency and morality.
Hitchcock's favorite theme of crime and punishment, true or morally guilty individuals is in this film's central theme. The main character Larita is presented as a completely morally depraved woman living outside the society. In this movie, it is the first time the figure of the possessive, manipulative and ruthless destructive mother appears. Hitchcock had placed it in many of his other movies again and again. In 2009 by Stephan Elliott did a new version of the story.
