SYNOPSIS:
Sylvester the Great (Bob Hope) is a 17th-century entertainer with an act so atrocious, he's exiled from England. Aboard a ship bound for America, he finds himself falling for the beautiful Princess Margaret (Virginia Mayo), a woman uninterested in love - not to mention his lousy one-liners. But when an evil band of pirates attacks the ship and captures the princess, her only hope is the cowardly comedian. Can Sylvester stop cracking jokes and muster the courage to rescue his royal love? In other words, will he and Margaret end up walking down the aisle, or walking the plank?

The Princess and the Pirate may not be Bob Hope's best overall film, but this it certainly provides a good venue for the King of the One-liners! Sylvester the Great (Hope) is a small-time stage performer who is on a ship heading to America. "My act is known all over Europe, that's why I'm going to America" he proclaims to Margaret (Virginia Mayo) who is a Princess in hiding and who can't get any peace while Sylvester is practicing his act in the next room.
Their voyage is interrupted when Captain Hook (Victor Mc Laglen) storms the ship to kidnap the Princess and hold her for ransom. Women are the only survivors in Hook's scheme, so naturally Sylvester gets into one of his "Seven Faces" by posing as an old gypsy woman to save his skin.
They escape with the help of Featherhead (Walter Brennan) who plays the ship's cartoonish tattoo artist and hatches a plan to double-cross the Captain by giving his treasure map to Sylvester.
When they get to their destination, the Princess is kidnapped again, but this time by Governor La Roche (Walter Slezak). I won't spoil the rest, but I have to say I was a bit surprised at the very end with the appearance of a certain someone.

Almost anything with Bob Hope is sure to please and this one was certainly very entertaining and a laugh a minute.

Other comments:

The color is a little inconsistent and there is one scene (when Sylvester is getting the map) that is clearly out of focus. But overall it is pleasant to watch.

Great One-Liners-

Princess: "Why don't you die like a man."

Sylvester (in drag): "I'd rather live like a woman, than die like a man." He then sees Featherhead giving him the eye- "Maybe not!"

-

Princess: "Why did you risk your life to rescue me?"

Sylvester: "I guess I was so excited I forgot I was a coward."
