But when he wins Christ's robe in a gambling game at the foot of the cross, his life is forever changed.

An xlnt widescreen transfer of the first Cinemascope movie, vastly superior to the laserdisc, with much improved sound as well. It was Burton's first major starring role and he hams it up all over the place (my wife does a killer imitation of his agonized "Were you out there?") except in scenes with Jean Simmons, who'd bring anyone down to earth. A harbinger of her future, when a 50's and 60's epic wasn't worth seeing if she wasn't in it. By the mid-60's she'd starred with just about every major actor on the scene and died last week, 1/22/10. Always thought of her as the British Audrey Hepburn. Jay Robinson's Caligula out-hams Burton handily (no mean feat), but Victor Mature does a pretty good job, even with his shirt on. The commentary track focuses mostly on Alfred Newman and his score and only occasionally veers back to the movie itself. Not very informative in that way, they don't mention for example that Robinson watched the first telecast of his first movie from prison. But one of the most palatable of Hollywood's Biblical monsters despite evident discomfort with the wide screen (some of the mattes are awful), and worth a look.
