SYNOPSIS:Prior to her successful MGM career, Jean Harlow landed her first top billed role in this racy tale about the perils of the big city. As an innocent small-town girl who trades her soda fountain job for a modeling job in New York, she quickly learns the ropes and the traps of her profession. Marie Prevost provides comic relief as Jean's wisecracking roommate and Mae Clarke is poignant and moving as a successful model undone by her tragic affair with a married man.

     | Joe | | Surprisingly honest assessment of single women's experiences of not-quite-single men. Like most Pre-Code films, it's not so much great as interesting for specific aspects: Harlow's early star turn, Prevost's convincing presence, and the above-mentioned honesty. And, of course, plenty of clothes-changing scenes, just in case the story wasn't enough. But like that other clothes-changer NIGHT NURSE, THREE WISE GIRLS is definitely worth seeing on its story merits alone, even if the script sometimes seems to be written by someone who has no idea how women talk to each other: each actress has at least one highly effective scene.
