The long-awaited release of the 1936 version of Show Boat is finally coming from Warner and is one of two classic titles announced this week from their Archive Collection.
The other is the Fifth and Final Season of Maverick which consists of 13 episodes on 3 discs.
Both will be available here at ClassicFlix on May 20th. These new DVDs add to the total of over 1,200 Warner Archive titles exclusively available for rent at ClassicFlix.com.
Edna Ferber's classic tale of life and love among a theatrical troupe on a Mississippi riverboat has received many dramatic treatments since its birth over eighty years ago. But none is more satisfying than this 1936 production, widely accepted as the best and most faithful of three screen versions of the Jerome Kern-Oscar Hammerstein musical.
A splendid, indeed definitive cast features Irene Dunne as the lovely Magnolia, fated to fall for Allan Jones' dashing riverboat gambler, Gaylord Ravenal. It is their turbulent romance and Magnolia's growth from a shy guileless girl to a mature star of the stage that form the core of the story. In her last film appearance, Helen Morgan will break your heart as the tragic Julie, with her songs 'Bill' and 'Can't Help Lovin' That Man.' And there is perhaps no more memorable performance in musical history than Paul Roberson's moving rendition of 'Ol' Man River.'
The legend of the West is back as Jack Kelly returns for the fifth and final season of Maverick.
Alternating with reruns featuring James Garner as brother Bret, Season Five's original episodes follow Bart Maverick (Kelly) as he deals himself the winning hand against crooked senators, four-flushing bankers, glamorous grifters, wish-granting leprechauns, Bonanza-spoofing ranchers and more in 13 classic adventures guest-starring cult favorites Marie Windsor, Sig Ruman, Reginald Owen, Kathleen Crowley and Jim Backus.
And while Maverick: The Complete Fifth Season marks the end of the run, the Maverick brothers would return, with Garner playing Bret in The New Maverick TV movie (1978) and the Bret Maverick series (1981-82), both guest-starring Kelly as Bart. Which only proves what their old Pappy might say: You cant keep a good cardsharp and con artist down.
