Royal Canadian Mounted Police ('Neath Canadian Skies / North of the Border / Trail of the Mounties / Where the North Begins)

If you went out in the lobby for a smoke, you missed it.

Screen Guild (soon to be Lippert Productions) made a six-pack of 'streamliners', four-reel featurettes designed to fit into the B movie slot with particularly long A pictures. Two of those dealt with Tom Neal and Allan Jenkins, Master Detectives; the other four stuck Russ 'Lucky' Hayden north of the border to see what trouble he could cause or get out of. 'neath Canadian Skies and North of the Border paired Hayden with Inez Cooper and were released in late '46; the two sequels, Where the North Begins and Trail of the Mounties, matched him with Jennifer Holt and hit theatres (is 'hit' the right word?) a year later. In this one, Hayden is a guy called Utah, who heads north to visit a trapper buddy. He finds the buddy missing, along with his furs and traps. Slimy townsman Doug Fowley accuses Hayden of doing the deed himself (he IS a stranger) and chubby Royal Mountie Lyle Talbot at first arrests our unlucky hero, but then plays a hunch and helps him clear his good name. Million-dollar Dialog: Mountie Lyle: 'What was that shot?' Hayden: 'Maybe somebody put a slug in the jukebox.' The good supporting cast includes pretty Miss Cooper and not-so-pretty I. Stanford Jolley, Richard Alexander, Jack Mulhall, and Anthony Warde, and Mr. Warde, here's a little free advice for ya: Don't ever, ever, EVER play a character with a 'French accent' again, mmkay? Look, for forty minutes, what do you want out of a movie? Alpha, by the way, lies and says this thing runs more than an hour. That's a-cause they give you 24 minutes of old trailers, and yeah, I watched 'em and noted the titles just for you, just another way to ensure you're gettin' your money's worth 'round here, Classicflix subscribers. Man's Country, Billy the Kid's Round-Up, Bulldog Courage, Feud of the Trail, Fighting Mad (a Renfrew of the Mounties picture!), His Fighting Blood, Mystery Mountain, The Phantom Empire, Red Blood of Courage, Smoking Gun, Riders of the Desert, The Lone Rider and the Bandit, The Phantom Patrol, Valley of Terror. You're welcome.
