The Ex-Mrs. Bradford (Warner Archive)

Jean Arthur as Myrna Loy (sort of)

The plot of this film isn't so much a crime-solving physician and his pushy ex-wife attempt to solve the murder of a jockey during a race so much as 'RKO borrows William Powell from MGM and Miss Arthur from Columbia and tries to make a Thin Man movie.' That's fine. Eric Blore is around as the put-upon butler to let us know this is an RKO picture; James Gleason is the detective on one wrong trail after another. The big problem with this movie is Jean Arthur, and yeah, THERE'S something I didn't foresee myself typing. Yes, she's beautiful and gorgeous and fills the lovely, skimpy gowns quite well, but... and I'm sure she'd agree with me... She's simply no Myrna Loy, who can pull off glamor like nobody's bi'ness. Miss Arthur is clearly a substitute for her, and rather than going out of her way to not imitate Myrna, I think she SHOULD have: I think Jean doing that delightful 'scrunchy face' of Mrs. Nick Charles' would've been a real addition to this film. Her schtick is pushing Dr. Powell to solve the crime while attempting to woo him back and have the divorce annulled and yet maintaining wry convos with him. Million-dollar Dialog: Jean: 'She wore a blue cocktail dress.' Bill: 'What's a cocktail dress?' Jean: 'Something to spill cocktails on.' Jean: 'Did you inoculate him?' Dr. Bill: 'With a little difficulty.' Jean: 'Oh, I thought you used a hypodermic.' Okay, that second one was funny. Robert Armstrong, Lila Lee, Ralph Morgan and Grant Mitchell are amongst the suspects, and by the way, the method used to kill the jockey is clever and gross and disgusting. Good plot twist. If you've never seen a Thin Man movie, watch this first. Then watch them. You'll enjoy this just fine. Sorry, Jean. Still love me?
